I've often felt that we overmow our parks and this has the impact of making trails that pass through them less shaded (since only the planted trees grow). Sometimes, like with PG County's Anacostia Trail, this is because the Army Corps of Engineers sees trees as an impediment to water flow in flooding (a policy they should rethink - at least to allow a line of trees along the trail). Other times, like the W&OD, it has to do with powerlines (but according to the Post, the W&OD is a death trap anyway, so who cares ;)) But I think there are a few places where a more au natural approach is better - places along the Mt. Vernon and Bluemont Junction come to mind.
