I wrote about this effort to transform unneeded parking meter posts into bike parking back in April. It seems that the look of it was a big hit and the commuterpage blog is reporting that Arlington is installing new bike racks that feature a circle welded on a pole (pictured).
Seattle has had some success with these (and it's where I first heard someone call the converted meters "lollipops"). I thought it was a good way to take advantage of the superior parking meters without removing bike parking. A win-win - as long as the top doesn't pop off.
Does anyone have any complaints about this rack? It's only anchored in one place, but I suspect it's still stronger than my lock. And a bike should be able to lean against it.
Speaking of the parking meter removals, The Examiner mentioned that DDOT is looking for feedback on them. Follow this link.

We've got over 10,000 "lollipops" (slang) in Toronto, with about 1,500 added a year. They're officially called "post and rings". :) They are pretty good, and can fit all over the place. Search for Toronto and Bikerack on Flickr and you'll find tons of photos of them. :)

No complaints; they work well enough for a couple bikes where space is a concern (though that's not the case for the first few). The design and the all-black paint scheme is aesthetically pleasing, especially compared to the green&silver&gray&yellow parking meter pole/rack combo. I like 'em!
