Hyattsville is working to become a LAB recognized Bicycle Friendly City.
A committee of dedicated individuals (which I am a part of) from Hyattsville and surrounding areas have been working for about a year on improving biking and walking conditions, and increasing safety in the area.
Now, we'd like to become certified as a Bicycle Friendly City under the requirements of the Bike League. To do so, we will need to form a sub-group of individuals joining their effort to complete the application process. If there is anyone in the area who would like to offer their expertise and be a part of our team for a short while to help the process and meet the August 17th deadline, please contact me off list to find out how you can help.
It should be fun, we are a very energetic and active bunch.
Thanks

This would make them the first only current bicycle friendly community in Maryland (but the third in the area). I think it's great they have a wiki with a map and more.- something I expect we'll see more of. iF you live in the area and want to give them a hand, I think it's a great project to get involved in.

Actually, they would be the second. Rockville is already on the list (they achieved the bronze).
BTW, Alexandria has applied and is making a lot of progress. Maybe they'll win the gold.

They were, you're right.

But they aren't any more because the designations expire after 2 years. So that's where I made my mistake. Instead of "first" it should read "only" or "only current".

My mistake was not knowing that the designation expires after 2 years. That's a really good idea - it ensures that the community continues to earn the distinction.
Sounds like Rockville has been slacking off.
