Adele Levine biked in from Wheaton
My girlfriend Ashley, who on my advice was also wearing four pairs of pants, and I got unsteadily on our bicycles and teetered down the street. My plan was to ride slowly enough to prevent sweating, but after the first hill, sweat was running down my back in steady rivulets.
Ashley began to question the wisdom of my plan.
She wanted to lock up the bikes and catch a bus.
And Nic Ryba and family rode in from Bethesda
The Bicyclists
Nic Ryba of Bethesda, a British citizen, traveled to the Mall by bicycle with his three children, Anna, 15, Thomas, 13, and William, 10. He thought the day went well.
The trip down the C&O Canal path with the three kids was great despite the cold, he said. The path was virtually deserted, and much of K Street NW seemed to be closed to traffic.
Ryba and his children left their bikes at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association valet parking service, which he said was "extremely efficient." The trip from Bethesda to the bike check-in took less than an hour.
Was there any other way to get from Bethesda to the Mall in less than an hour? Maybe if you got lucky on the metro. Maybe.

I made it from Silver Spring to K street in about 20 minutes, just riding down 16th St. I've never seen 16th so abandoned, even in the middle of the night. I found a meter to lock up to at 16th and K, and just walked right in. I brought layers to add after I arrived since I knew it would be cold once I stopped pedaling.

Yeah, it was like a ghost town in Northeast. A raccoon ran out in front of me. I was surprised not to see tumbleweeds and coyotes.
