House minority leader John Boener said this about bike paths last month (and they're multi-use paths, John. Try telling a jogger that they're just for bikes.)
“I think there’s a place for infrastructure, but what kind of
infrastructure? Infrastructure to widen highways, to ease congestion
for American families? Is it to build some buildings that are
necessary?” He stated. “But if we’re talking about beautification
projects, or we’re talking about bike paths, Americans are not going to
look very kindly on this.”
Bike paths do ease congestion. And considering the health concerns in this country, even recreational cycling is becoming 'necessary'.
More here from Adam Voiland.
Jeez, elected officials of all stripes are uneducated in many ways.
We don't have to allow this either, you know.

I can't believe anybody is still trying to "ease" congestion. Look at Northern Virginia: roads will fill to capacity no matter how big they are. I have no science to support that, just my own observations. What people and politicians need to realize is that there need to be more options for transit, and THAT's where bike paths, railroads and hot air balloons come in.
