From a Golden Triangle BID email
The Metropolitan Police Department (MDP) has asked us to share the following information.
Over the past three weeks there has been a significant increase in the theft of bicycles throughout the Second District, including 11 within the Golden Triangle in June. In an effort to prevent future thefts and to aid in the recovery of stolen bicycles, MPD is recommending the following simple suggestions.
To bike riders in the District of Columbia:
· Invest in a quality bike lock and use the lock whenever and wherever you are not riding the bicycle.
· Lock your bike in an area that is well lit.
· If you are not going to use your bicycle for a significant period of time please locate a place to safely secure your bike, preferably inside.
· Write down all information about your bicycle, make, size and the serial number, and store this information in a safe place. The serial number is found underneath the bicycle between the crank arms, the bottom bracket. Keep all receipts for your bicycle including the purchase receipt and repair receipts. These will help in proof of ownership.
· Register your bicycle with the National Bike Registry at www.nationalbikeregistry.com. Registered bikes are nine times more likely to be returned.
