Walkers, runners, bikers, and skaters will take to the streets of Fort DuPont Park at the first-ever Feet in the Street celebration on Saturday, August 29. The District Department of Transportation and the National Park Service teamed up to close the park’s roads to motor vehicles—and boost physical activity, green transportation, and community spirit.
From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors can enjoy organized hikes, community garden tours, bike rides, physical fitness demonstrations and more, sponsored by the Ward 7Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander, Washington Area Bicyclist Association, District Department of Parks and Recreation, Unique Development, Fathers First, Anacostia Watershed Society, Environmental Leadership Program, and Far Northeast Consortium. The 1.6-mile car-free corridor includes Fort Davis Drive SE between Ridge Road and Pennsylvania Avenue and Fort DuPont Drive SE between the activity center and Fort Davis Drive.
Celebrate the coming of the Full Moon!

Join WABA and City Bikes on September 3rd, 2009 as we celebrate the full moon by taking a ride up the Capital Crescent/Georgetown Branch Trail at night ending with a barbeque at the City Bikes shop in Chevy Chase. WABA will lead a ride back to the Waterfront Park, but riders can feel free to leave whenever they please.

Riders will be able to register for the event online in advance or the night of the event. The small registration fee goes towards covering food costs and supporting the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.
Food Provided includes: Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Veggie Burgers, Veggie Dogs, Chips, Soda, Water.

g) at the WABA Bike and Gear Swap! Bike sales benefit the seller (90%) and WABA’s efforts (10%) on behalf of cycling in the Washington area; donations
benefit the donor (a good feeling as well as a receipt good for tax
purposes) and Bikes for the World provides jobs and access to school
and health services here and overseas. In either case, your bike goes
to good use. The Bike and Gear Swaps are hosted by The Bicycle Place (behind the shop) at 8313 Grubb Rd., Silver Spring, MD.
WABA's FREE Confident City Cycling Classes
Want to use your bike to get where you need to go? Learn to safely share the road with cars, other bikes, and pedestrians. These classes are currently sponsored by city transportation departments and are provided free of charge.

DC BIke Ambassador at the Mt. Pleasant Movie in the Park

Mount Pleasant Main Street will present a free outdoor screening of the cycling-themed movie 'Breaking Away' on Saturday, August 22nd in Lamont Street Park (Lamont St. NW & Mt. Pleasant St. NW). Activities start at 7pm, and include Yoga for Cyclists by Past Tense Studio, The DC Bike Ambassador, free bike clinic & repair, restaurant specials, and live music. The movie is part of the Mt. Pleasant Movie Series, featuring a movie the fourth Saturday in August and September.

We've got a Members Only pool party and ride planned for Sunday August 23.
Because of the late afternoon start, no need to rearrange any Sunday activities. Go on your club ride, attend services, have your buffet, watch cartoons, indulge in the garden, or sleep late. In fact, we're feeding you, so the only thing you need to do is blow off any plans for dinner.

Car Free Day

The DC region is once again celebrating International Car Free Day! Car Free Day encourages people to get around without their car - highlighting transit, bicycling, walking and all alternative modes of transportation. By taking a fair number of cars off the roads people who live and work there are given a chance to consider how their neighborhood might look and work with a lot fewer cars.
Be one of the thousands of people in the area to pledge to be car free on Sept. 22! WABA will helping out DDOT in planning this year's DC celebration of Car Free Day with a street festival going on throughout the day dowtown.
