The GW Hatchet had an article about how green all the buildings in Square 54 (the site of the old hospital) are going to be and it added this about the bike parking.
In the parking garage, there will be 40 bicycle parking spaces for the office component and 30 bicycle parking spaces for the residential component.
That sounds good. The facility will have 1026 automobile parking spaces, so that exceeds the bike parking required under the current zoning, which requires one bike parking space for every 20 car spaces (51.7 in this case). They neither mention, nor show in the drawing, bike parking for visitors.
But, under the proposed zoning regulations, a site of this size - 834,000 sq. feet total consisting of 84,000 sq. feet retail, 436,000 sq. feet of office and 314,000 sq. feet. of residential - would be required to have 409 indoor bike parking spaces for employees and residents and another 60 bike parking spaces for visitors located within 50 feet of the entrance. It would also be required to provide 3 showers per gender and 31 lockers located near the showers.
That makes their 70 spaces a little less exciting.
[As an aside, they promoted in their material submitted to the zoning board that they were giving information to the community at www.square54.com, but that site is "under construction". I wonder if it ever had information]
