It Pays to Complain by Rootchopper
VDOT started messing with the Mount Vernon Trail underneath the beltway. The original, unpaved detour generated numerous complaints from trail users. Eventually VDOT came back and paved the detour.

Thanks to all of the complainers!

Not to be a negative person, but though it is paved, it's quite possibly the worst paving job in the history of asphalt. There are many Jimmy Hoffa lumps and honestly it was probably better before they started messing with it.

In the interest of not being too negative, I wrote a letter to the city ;).
It really makes no sense why cycling-related projects are often done so poorly when they use such minimal resources and receive so little pressure (i.e. - no cars/trucks tearing up the pavement).
No way would the same workers have done this crappy of a job if it were in the street -- no one would stand for it.

Definitely still needs a lot of work and attention.

What's the timetable for completion of the trail and park in that area?
