In September 2011 Joseph P. Young, a retired aerospace engineer who worked at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center until 1991, was severely injured in a fall from a bicycle, at the time it was written on the Baltimore Bicycling Club website
Joe Young from Laurel was injured while riding alone in the Bowie area on Saturday. He was found unconscious on the side of the road by passing motorists. The cause of his fall is unknown.
He was an active cyclist, even at 80 years old.
During the past 20 years he became an avid bicyclist. He participated in many charity bike rides across the U.S, supporting his favorite causes while enjoying various regions of the U.S.
But he passed away in September from the injuries he suffered in that fall.
Joseph P. Young, 81, an aerospace engineer who retired from the NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in 1991, died Sept. 28 at his home in Laurel.
He suffered a traumatic brain injury in a bicycle accident in September 2011 and never fully recovered, his daughter Cynthia Shelberg said.
