Here's what the AP is reporting on this crash that appears to have occured early Saturday morning.
Police in Washington say a bicyclist was killed when an item he was carrying got lodged in his front wheel.
Police say an officer was flagged down about 5 a.m. Saturday and told about an unconscious person lying in the 700 block of Morton Street, NW. Police say an investigation determined 28-year-old Antonio Alvarez-Benitez of Washington lost control and fell after the item, which had been tied down, became loose and lodged in the fender, forks and spokes of the front wheel. Police say he was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Wear a helmet.

Do we know he was not wearing a helmet?

I suspect he was carrying something on the handlebars, which is more dangerous than not wearing a helmet.

ironically, in one of the rare news stories where it might matter, they did not report whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet.

Carrying something on the handlebars is dangerous. Not wearing a helmet is also dangerous.
