WTOP has a somewhat driver-oriented story on the M Street Cycletrack, reporting that it will be installed in August. The track will run from Thomas Circle at 14th Street to Georgetown at 28th Street. The story also includes some previously reported information on Capital Bikeshare expansion.
- "DDOT has studied the preliminary impact of bicycle lanes on overall vehicle traffic along L Street and found only a slightly negative impact." I hope they release the results of that study soon, it should serve to quiet some of the criticism. And does "overall vehicle traffic" mean cars or cars and bikes?
- "DDOT hopes these new lanes not only will appeal to recreational bicyclists, but to commuters as well." I think DDOT views these lanes as primarily for transportation. I bet recreational users make up 10% or less of the total and that DDOT sees it the same way. It's a weird way to frame it.
- "However, DDOT also admits it will have to eliminate parking spaces along M Street to make room for the new bike lanes. Goodno estimates between 40 and 80 spaces will be removed -- less than the 150 spots that were eliminated along L Street last year." Is that really an "admission" or just a fact? Another odd phrasing. But this fact means that AAA will push the "War on Cars" in 3, 2, 1...
