Doesnt sound like hawk, sounds like a rapidly flashing yellow light

Speaking of hawks, or eagles, there is a very large one that hangs out at the G'town end of the CCT. I've seen it near the RCP and saw it following the canal up the CCT on Friday. Its huge.

A HAWK is a flashing red light, which means you have to stop and yield right of way. A flashing yellow light, on the other hand, is used where you have the right of way and aren't expected to yield. So what exactly does this signal mean? How are people supposed to behave. (I have the same objection to the flashing yellow at the crosswalk on MacArthur Boulevard in DC).

The problem with trail crossings is no one really wants to address the issue of right-of-way.

The stop line is too damn close.

Just put the stop line for the crosswalks back 30 feet. That would give a buffer for cyclists/peds to assess that drivers are slowing down. Cyclists/peds at the foot of the crosswalk could see both lanes. Once you see that cars are stopping you can proceed. Heck, drivers wouldn't even have to stop completely. Give me a rolling 5 mph stop at 30 feet and let's all get going.

Putting the stop line right at the cross walk gives no room for error, ambiguity and delays. That's the fundamental problem with ROW crosswalks.

Yeah, this trend toward putting yellow flashing lights at crosswalks is ridiculous. Either teach motorists to respect the pedestrian right of way, or give us a red light. A yellow light is just a waste of money.

@SJE--it might be an osprey. (I've seen one hanging out on the bare branches of the tree near the end of the CCT where double crested cormorants also like to hang out and dry off after a swim.)

Interestingly, the crosswalk with the flashing yellow light on MacArthur also has a stop line, and it's a good 30 feet at least ahead of the crosswalk.

There is a bald eagle that lives on Roosevelt Island. I've been late to work on more than one occasion watching him fly up and down the river.
