The default passwords for a number of those highway signs got fairly wide distribution recently, and the number of people playing with them has exploded. (To the point where it's getting to be a public safety issue.) At some point, presumably, the various DOTs will start securing the things properly.

A couple of years back near where the W&OD crossed Hunter Mill the sign said, "Aliens Spotted" and "Please Use Condoms"
Don't know if those two sentiments are connected.
