The Arlington Community Bike Ride was held on May 27th. I didn't make it since I was at a wedding, but the weather was perfect. The Sun Gazette had a rather good article on it. Both County Board Chairman Chris Zimmerman and County Board Vice Chairman Paul Ferguson were there. Zimmerman said, “We like to think we're the most bike-friendly community in the metropolitan area.”
Even though you have to pay to do this (which some of you thought was silly), I think these community bike rides are a great idea. Especially when they don't close the roads like they used to during the BikeDC rides were going on. I say that, because I think rides like these bring inexperienced riders out. If they ride under normal conditions, but in a crowd, they see places where they could ride to school, church, for fun, etc...I think every community should have one of these. And of course they should bring BikeDC back - but avoid hurricane season (I never did pick up my t-shirt - I wonder if they threw them out during the move).
The article also mentions that the Four Mile Run (or W&OD) extension under 395 will start this year.
Arlington already has 32 miles of bike trails, and the county government has been adding bicycle lanes to large hunks of local pavement. This year, a new connector will be started that will allow bicyclists to travel under Shirley Highway.
