I'd love to see something like this done at New Carrollton, something connecting the Metro Station to the Westgate neighborhood.
“While we are building roads and expanding mass transit to give County commuters more choices, we are also providing more opportunities for those who can walk or bike to work or shop,” said Council President George Leventhal. “This pedestrian bridge is further evidence that we need to do more of everything if we are serious about relieving traffic congestion.”
The new bridge and bikeway gives Forest Glen residents and bicyclists easy and safe access to the Forest Glen Metrorail Station and retail establishments along Georgia Avenue. Stairs about mid-way along the bridge provide pedestrian access for residents on the east side of Georgia Avenue. The County has installed a new crosswalk and traffic light at that location to help pedestrians cross safely. The bridge is fully accessible by persons with disabilities.
All freeway and major high ways should have parallel pedestrian and bicycle access and facilities. It's not so much that I dislike or disagree with projects like the Mid - County Connector- it's just that there is so much official resisitance to any possible multi- modal approach which would include bicycle ways, ped ways, and rail lines on both sides [directions].This country needs to re-think it's policies towards major road building projects- toward multi -modality as the standard.-W
