After choosing Chris Balish's book How to Live Well Without Owning a Car (Ten Speed Press, $12.95) as the Color of Money Book Club selection for the money, Michelle Singletary hosted him for a chat. Unfortunately he didn't show up. Still, there's a good discussion (along with a lot of unrelated questions). One woman - in Marietta, OH - had terrible luck with her experiment.
I tried biking to work for two weeks. In order to get her to school and me to work on time (supervision at school starts at 8:40 and I had to be at work at 9:00) she went with my neighbor's kids. First of all there are hills any way you go. Not nice to go to work all sweaty. Secondly, I got hit almost everyday and got knocked off once (yes, I wear a helmet and just got a bad bruise on my knee).
