It really is the worst feeling. I've had three bikes stolen in my lifetime. The first time was at the local library as an 11-year old. I walked out, talking to a friend, walked over to where my bike was and then just stood there. I really could not figure out what had happened for several minutes until my friend said, "Do you think it was stolen?"
Turned out this guy who ran a local bike shop was paying kids to steal bikes. He'd ship them to Houston where a Houston bike store owner was doing the same and would ship bikes back to Beaumont. It worked fine until a bike was stolen twice. Stolen in Houston, shipped to Beaumont, sold, stolen, shipped back to Houston where the owner recognized it in the guy's store. Worst part - the guy who owned the Beaumont shop was a family friend.
Anyway Lindsay at Self-Righteous Biker had her bike stolen recently thanks to the use of a cable lock. Still it sucks that we live in a world where you need a high tech $55 lock to keep your bike safe. Keep your eye out for it (I really don't plan to keep doing this, I'd love to set up something like this, but with work, grad school and wedding planning - I just won't have the time)
Congrats!
