An article about Alexandria's ambivalence (<- alliteration) towards the new developments on the PG County side of the river ran in the post last week. It included this about the Wilson Bridge...
The new bridge, a key link in the nation's most heavily trafficked north-south corridor, raises the possibility that Old Town will become a stopping point along the way for even more vehicles. A network of conjoined bike trails will funnel hundreds of cyclists from Virginia to Maryland and back.
While I'm looking forward to the bridge's bikeway, it won't be as big a success as it could be because, as I originally mentioned here, there are still no plans to connect it to DC - or more accurately Anacostia. According to this map, one will have to bike across the bridge from Virginia, then over the Beltway, then under the roads connecting to National Harbor to be dumped out onto something called the Heritage Trail along a new road called South Road. From there, you take Oxon Hill Road to Bald Eagle Road (over the beltway again) through Oxon Hill Farm National Park to cross into DC on th Oxon Cove trail - altogether a very long and circuitous detour. I wonder how well signed it will be?
So the Wilson Bridge bikeway, for all awesomeness, will mostly be a connection to National Harbor at this point.
