From the CCCT website:
Councilmember Roger Berliner is hosting a Roundtable Discussion on the proposed Woodmont East Development Project on Saturday, September 15, 2007, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, see the Roundtable Announcement.
A development proposal is being submitted to the Montgomery County Planning Board to build a hotel, residential units, and an underground parking garage at the northeast corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Avenues. The developer is proposing closing the Bethesda Trail Tunnel for over two years during project construction.
We encourage trail supporters to attend this roundtable discussion to express their views to Councilmember Berliner and to the development team about closing the Bethesda trail tunnel. The Regional Services Center is at 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda. Detailed directions to the Regional Services Center are available on the Montgomery County Website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.
The CCCT met with the developer recently, and is expecting more detailed information on their efforts to find alternatives to closing the tunnel in about a week. It's likely the CCCT will oppose the tunnel closure and will mount a publicity campaign to keep it open. I say if they really need to close it - if it's worth that much to them, they wouldn't mind extending the tunnel under Woodmont and Bethesda Avenue, would they?
Regarding extending the tunnel, that would be an interesting compromise on behalf of the developer.
