Fenty said the center is part of a larger project to encourage more bicycle commuting.
“That’s our goal: get more people on bicycles,” he said.
Fenty said there are a number of reasons why the city is making this push now.
“Environmental, transportation focused, really making sure there are a lot of options for people to get around the city,” he said.

According to the Department of Transportation, the station being built does not involve SmartBikes -- it will be parking for privately-owned bikes and also will offer bike rentals.
However, the transportation department said it hopes to have SmartBikes outlets placed elsewhere in the neighborhood around Union Station, probably around each of the two Metro stations at New York Avenue and Union Station.
