It drove about 100 feet down the NE Branch trail in Riverdale. If you turn the view around, you can see a cyclist coming up from behind.

Am I inferring correctly that all of the photos on streetview are taken from a vehicle? No vehicle can be seen in the photo, so I am assuming it was taken from a vehicle, which would mean the vehicle had to be on the trail in order to get the shot.

That's correct. They place the camera on top of a car and so in this case the car mistakenly drove down the trail a while.
