From the Canal Connection, the newsletter of the C&O Canal Trust
Repairs to the 125-foot breach of the towpath just north of Anglers could take two years or more to complete, but a temporary bypass is already complete and available for visitors to use. Without the bypass, walkers and cyclists venturing north from Anglers had to take a detour via Berma Road, which did not connect to the towpath again for over 1.5 miles. For frequent hikers of Billy Goat Trail A, the detour meant access to the trail from Anglers would actually take longer than accessing the trail from Great Falls. Now, with the installation of the bypass, Billy Goat Trail A can again be easily accessed from Anglers, one of the most popular areas of the canal for hikers, bikers, and kayakers.
We owe a special thanks to the C&O Canal NHP staff for working so quickly to establish a safe and convenient bypass for visitors as well as to the Trust's many Friends of the Canal for their support.
I need to ride up there...
I grew up riding my bike to that spot
but we had to either take the service road by the gold mine loop or portage it for a section before great falls
