GO Transit, the Transit agency for Toronto, recently announced they're going to add bike racks to all of their buses and bicycle storage areas at many of their stations as part of their plan (based on a report before its board recently)
to double, to 35 per cent, the number of customers who bike, walk or ride local buses to their GO station by 2020.
"There are a lot of amenities that could be incorporated into other capital works, such as sheltered bike parking in a parking structure or adding a sidewalk to parking lots," Niece said.
In some cases, reserved parking spaces will have to be moved.
GO has already displaced some parking spots to install bike shelters at certain stations, Niece said.
"For every vehicle space you take away, that's 10 bike parking spaces," she said.
It is also in the midst of adding 100 bike shelters to the system, at a cost of $3 million.
Forty-four were installed last year and 56 will be added this year, Niece said.
The report suggests that more secure bike parking would improve the attraction of cycling to GO.
In conjunction with Toronto, GO has installed secure bike lockers at just three stations. GO expects to expand that.
A mix of secure parking and shelters will appeal to both occasional and daily cyclists, Niece said.
Meanwhile, back here in DC, Prince William County is going to test a ferry
from stops at Prince William marinas at Quantico, Dumfries and Occoquan to Fort Belvoir, Alexandria and the Washington Navy Yard. The test boat will be a catamaran that seats 149. It will conduct test boat runs on May 4, 5 and 6
No word on if the ferry will allow bikes on board. They should, but if not they should inclued secure bike parking at both ends (If they use the new dock at Diamond Teague Park, maybe the secure bike parking at National Stadium could be used for commuters).
Finally, Adam Voiland interviews Donald C. Paine Jr., the lead architect who designed the soon-to-open bike station.
How many bikes will the transit center hold?
It's 150 now, but we might be able to get another 75 bikes on a third
level of racks. The intent is to put rental bikes on the third level.
