In about half an hour there will be a dedication of DC's new artistic bike racks (I'm heading there now).
The artists whose designs were selected
are Matt Barinholtz, Karin Edgett, William Gordon, Carolina Mayorga, Melinda
Merinsky and Joe Sutliff. All six bike rack designs will be displayed at the
dedication event.
The DC Creates Public Art Artistic Bike
Rack proposal invited local artists to enhance the city’s standard bike racks
and create unique designs that could be placed in locations city-wide. Artists
were encouraged to incorporate their interpretation of the “DC
experience” into their artwork as well as consider particular locations
for the placement of the work. The intent of the project is to encourage more
people to use bicycles and increase the number of bike racks throughout the
city that are both functional and artistic.
They do look good, and I can see them adding a bit of zing to some streetscapes. There are 28 of them BTW.
Where are the racks exactly? One location or spread throughout the city?
