City Paper's Best Local Bike Blog 2009
I've seen them several times over the years on the Mount Vernon Trail, and once on the street in front of my house.

Its a snapping turtle. Normally aquatic, they can be found quite far from water this time of year as they search for a place to nest (lay eggs).
