David, pictured, sent me this photo of a pretty big turtle crossing the CCT. I've seen a few snakes out, lots of deer, a fox and even a chicken (yes, crossing a road, but I don't know why), but never a turtle this big.

I've seen them several times over the years on the Mount Vernon Trail, and once on the street in front of my house.

Its a snapping turtle. Normally aquatic, they can be found quite far from water this time of year as they search for a place to nest (lay eggs).
