I noticed recently that Phase I of the Washington Boulevard Trail in Arlington is underway as was expected last year. Phase I will build a shared use path on the west side of Washington Boulevard from Arlington Boulevard to the Towers Park, just north of Columbia Pike. The path will connect to the Arlington Boulevard Trail. David Goodman, Arlington's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program's Manager, says they hope to finish it sometime in November. Phase II from Towers Park to Columbia Pike is currently under design and they hope to square away funding (with VDOT revenue sharing), get approval and be working on it by this time next year. This trail will make for a shorter connection between the Arlington Boulevard Bridge and trail past the Pentagon's west side.
The first stubby little section opened a few days ago from south of the Route 50 bridge to the mystery street that connects Courthouse Road to Washington Blvd southbound. All good, except they've opened the trail but haven't filled in the road surface/curb. Beware! I got caught this morning there and fell over...And didn't have toe clips on at the time.
