The City of Alexandria’s Strategic Goal for Transportation to Be Discussed at November 9 Public Forum
Residents are invited to speak at a public forum about the City of Alexandria’s strategic goal for Transportation tonight November 9, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., City Council Workroom, City Hall, 301 King Street. Community input is important to the City’s current strategic plan review and will help shape implementation moving forward. William D. Euille and Councilman Paul Smedberg will lead the discussion on the transportation goal, which focuses on Alexandria as an integrated, multimodal transportation system that efficiently and effectively gets people from point “A” to point “B”.
Residents are encouraged to give feedback in advance by submitting their comments online at www.alexandriava.gov/StrategicPlanning, by fax to 703.519.3356 or in writing to the Department of Transportation, Room 4100, City Hall, 301 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
In written and/or oral comments, participants should address the following questions:
1. What two specific, measurable objectives should the City use to achieve its transportation goal?
2. What two specific projects or programs should Alexandria undertake in the next 10 years to accomplish its objectives?
3. What indicators will allow the City to measure progress toward its overall goal?
4. What opportunities should the City seek to capitalize on in pursuit of its goal?
5. What constraints should the City consider?

And this needs to be dealt with today too.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is seeking to ELIMINATE funding for Bikeway Maintenance in Montgomery County as part of his budget Savings Plan. This Tuesday (11/10) the proposed cuts will come before County Council “T&E” Committee, and we need to make ourselves heard before then. Tell the committee TODAY to keep funding at the current level of $100,000. Inform them that maintenance of bikeways is critical to our safety. Bikeways include not just paths and bike lanes but also shoulders on many county roads. Maintenance includes sweeping away treacherous leaves and debris, trimming back brush and (for paths) removing snow. Tell the committee members that sweeping especially must be done more frequently. Be sure to relate your personal experiences that illustrate the need for more maintenance. Such stories can be compelling!”
“Meanwhile the Executive is proposing only a tiny cut to road maintenance, reducing total road maintenance expense by less than 1%.”
The Montgomery County budget issue still needs bicyclists to take action, because now the budget cuts move to the full Council. The Council will vote on it next Tuesday 11/17. Keep sending the Council your input! The T&E Committee voted to keep $50K in the budget, but not the full $100K funding. I believe they are still supporting the 0.53% (that's .0053) cut to the 18 million dollar road maintenance budget, even as they approve a 50% cut to the bikeway budget. What a sacrifice.
