From Arlington DOT
The long-awaited Harrison Street connector, a short section of trail that links the Custis Trail to North Harrison Street, is now open to the public. The new trail connection is a more direct and intuitive link between the Custis Trail, which carries between 800 and 1,200 riders each day, and Harrison Street, which connects the Bluemont and Tara Leeway Heights neighborhoods to points north of Lee Highway. It also provides a calmer north-south biking alternative to George Mason Drive. Prior to the new connection, the only way to access Harrison Street from the Custis Trail was through an opening 300 feet further west along Fairfax Drive. Additional work will take place during the final weeks of 2009 to relocate a utility pole wire and install a new pedestrian ramp at the top of the trail.
This project, listed as a "near term" 2nd priority project in Arlington's Master Transportation Plan, was first proposed by the Bluemont Civic Association in 2006 as a Neighborhood Conservation project, but later received funding from a PRCR Parks Enhancement Grant as well as the BIKEArlington program. Design and construction was a collaborative effort between the Department of Environmental Services Staff and PRCR staff.
