DCMud writes about the release of the RFP for the former trolley stations and tunnels under Dupont Circle, that I've proposed be used in part for a bike station (a real one this time).
Today's action indicates the District is looking for groups interested in using all or just sections of the underground station, but will select no more than two groups to use the area.
the District makes it clear that projects should not come with ideas and empty coffers. "The District is not prepared to offer subsidy or financial assistance."
I don't think a bike station could make it without a subsidy.
The underground idea loses on one major aspect of a bike station: visibility. We should be looking for spaces that are very public and very obvious, otherwise it will only be used by the hardened bike commuter clique. Bike stations need to normalize and promote cycling, not conceal it out of sight.

I think if you had signs over the entrances - like the old Dupont Downunder did, that would be a pretty visible item in a high traffic spot.
