As reported at GGW, DCist and Get There, there will soon be a new traffic pattern at the intersection of Florida Ave, New York Ave and 1st St NE.
Starting on June 4th 1st and FLA ave will be one way streets there and all traffic will move around the "virtual circle" counterclockwise. Luckily, the Met Branch trail is open so fewer cyclists will use this intersection, but for those who still do, you'll need to change your pattern when going north or east.
Going north on 1st, cyclists will need to turn right on NY Ave, then get over to the left and make a left on FLA and then get over to the right to make a right on Eckington (or use crosswalks and sidewalks to cross the Wendy's lot like a pedestrian.
Going east on FLA will require a right onto 1st, a left onto NY and then a right back on to FLA. DDOT's purpose in this is
This project provides short-term relief to improve circulation and decrease accidents at the intersections of 1st Street, New York Avenue and Eckington Place, NE. The traffic signals and streetlights, crosswalks sidewalks will be upgraded and new circular flow will be implemented to allow easy access for motorists, pedestrians and bikers.
This is a temporary pattern until a new O Street section is built which will help those transitioning from NY to FLA.
Even this is an "interim solution" as the long term New York Avenue plan is build a bridge over Florida Avenue.
