From a press release. Congratulations to them:
On Tuesday December 7th, representatives from Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling (FABB), a local bicycling group, were honored by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for the successful completion of a project that has become a valuable resource for bike advocates in Virginia and elsewhere. Just over a year ago, FABB volunteers won a grant from Alliance for Biking & Walking to write a guide intended to help bridge the gap between advocates and design engineers. The Alliance grants are awarded to jump-start innovative projects with the potential to dramatically increase biking and walking in the U.S.
FABB worked for a year doing research, meeting with transportation officials, and writing the guide that was published this summer. The guide was prepared by Fionnuala Quinn, a civil engineer, and Bruce Wright, chairman of FABB, with assistance from Kerie Kitt, a long-time cyclist. It covers both the technical aspects of good design for bicyclists as well as how to be effective in dealing with the process.
The guide demystifies and streamlines the confusing road design process with easy-to-follow flow charts, handy check lists and explanations that make sense to those who don't have a degree in engineering. The guide has been distributed throughout Virginia and the United States. Shane Farthing, the new executive director of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, said that his copy of the guide was one of the first things he read when he took the top job at WABA and it is now dog-eared and marked up.
Fionnuala Quinn is accepting the honor from the Board on behalf of FABB. “The Fairfax County bike staff, Charlie Strunk and Jeff Hermann, VDOT staff and others gave us many useful insights during the project. We appreciated all of the county support in working to improve the quality of community dialog on important design issues”, said Ms. Quinn. The Guide for Reviewing Public Road Design and Bicycling Accommodations for Virginia Bicycle Advocates was published in July of 2010. Copies can be downloaded at www.fabb-bikes.org/guide..
Congrats FABB!
