It's looking to be a little warmer today
- FABB has more information on the Ghost Bike they erected for Christopher Benton.
- NPR has a touching story about Quan Chu, the "Mayor of Chinatown", hit and killed by cyclist who left the scene.
- Future closings of the Custis Trail
- Loudoun County is working on a list of bike and ped projects to seek funding for. "At the top of the list of priorities, supervisors said, should be pedestrian and cyclist access to the proposed Metro stations on Routes 606 and 772 in eastern Loudoun. Current designs of the station limit access to the new stations to vehicles only." [WC: bikes are vehciles] “This isn’t just for the benefit of the people who might want to bicycle or walk to Metro. This is also going to help the people who might want to get a parking spot because we’re probably not going to have enough.”
- A story about the Mt. Vernon district bicycle mounted police. I think a lot of people think bicycle cops enforce bike laws, which I find kind of weird. [OT: there has to be a better solution to homeless camps then "move along," right?]
- New plan for the Mall that was approved unanimously by the National Capital Planning Commission last month includes alternative methods for linking the mall "to different forms of transportation like the D.C. Circulator bus and the new Capital Bikeshare program."
- ICC construction damaged the Brooke Manor hiker/biker path.
- An article in SPAN, targeted at an Indian audience, is about the increasing popularity of cycling in the U.S. and features interviews with many people in the DC area, including WABA's soon to be leaving Chantal Buchser
- Capital Bikeshare makes GGW's the Coalition for Smarter Growth list of the Top 5 smart growth moments of the year.
- Winter cycling advice is everywhere. And light give aways continue. At least CaBi won't completely shut down like other systems will. “Of course [ridership] will dwindle,” says Chris Holben, a bicycle program specialist with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) in Washington D.C. The District’s Capital Bikeshare system will not be closing over the winter, but is in the process of creating guidelines for possible snow days when the system must be shut down; these will be released to users next week. “Usage is currently around 1000 trips per day, down from 1700-1800 a few months ago,” Holben adds.
- Gray's budget proposes getting rid of the "unified fund" that paid for many bike projects. If DDOT is able to expand Capital Bikeshare as they are hoping, the Unified Fund will give them the flexibility to do that. It made it possible to launch CaBi in just 12 months.
A clarification: that Top 5 Smart Growth Moments isn't GGW's per se. It's from the Coalition of Smarter Growth and was crossposted to GGW.
