There wasn't much news from this month's Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting as they were busy with houskeeping issues such as committee membership, early goal setting and other navel gazing. The one theme that I detected was that the downtown BID and Golden Triangle BID really support cycling.
DDOT is about 50% done with the design of cycletracks on L&M streets. These will stretch from Mass Ave to Penn Ave, but the cycletrack on M Street could extend into Georgetown a little bit. The cycletrack on M will probably be on the north side of the street (making it similar to 15th Street) and this will involve removing a few parking spaces to ensure visibility. Unlike 15th street, these cycletracks will each go only one way - the same direction the rest of the traffic goes on those streets. DDOT is working closely with the two BIDs mentioned above, who are being very supportive of the plan (despite what the Examiner thinks).
In addition, DDOT has installed 5 new bike corrals (on street bike parking) including one in front of Macy's. Despite them being installed in December, people reported heavy use. The BIDs are in support not only of this onstreet parking but more in other locations as well.
I guess cyclists have money to spend too.
So DDOT *ISN'T* taking one of the ThinkBike Workshop recommendations, which was to create a 2-way cycletrack on M from Georgetown east.
