Maybe there is some regulation that requires to have a worker for every safety cone?

So how do we switch from this big truck, big crew for everything operating procedure, to this:

Let's just say thank you for the trail maintenance, and worry later about how many people it should take.

Is this really a 5-man job?

Sure is. Don't you know, two guys to do the work, three to watch. As my dad always says, "I love work; I could watch it all day long." :)

Seriously, though, glad they did this. It wasn't horrible there, but the assortment of asphalt patches there did make for a little bit of a rough crossing, and it certainly wasn't getting any better on its own.

Not seen are two more guys off camera installing "dismount before crossing" signs.

I sent a complaint about that intersection last year, to the VDOT link on the left column of this website. They forwarded my note to the NPS. Within a week or two, they sent a scraper to level out the road surface. That was an improvement but there was still a bit of a dropoff from the trail to the road on both sides.

Looks like they finally fixed that problem too. The new intersection appears to be much more friendly to road bike tires. (Mountain bike tires loved the rough old intersection.)

Anyone who expected a somewhat smooth ride through will be disappointed. I rode over it with my road bike this moring and there still seems to be the same drop-off at the curbs as before albeit with a nice smooth surface in between.

They could have just raised that portion to be a street bump and reverse the stop signs but I guess that would have inconveniencen drivers too much who, BTW and to their credit, stop for cyclists more often than not.
