Mount Vernon Trail Connection to US 1 Closed by Rootchopper
Froggie adds more on this at JDTP.
VDOT decided to close the Route 1 path connector to Washington St/Mt Vernon Trail/Wilson Bridge, in order to do maintenance on the light poles on the bridge over Cameron Run. This in-and-of-itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they chose to do it during evening rush hour, when there are a fair number of people bicycling home to Huntington along the path. Nevermind that it prevented being able to count bikes and pedestrians this evening as part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.
He further points out that the detour here (which was not signed, so just had to know it) isn't very safe, but at least it's long. There are better times to do this - like 2am.
Yep, my wife and I rode right past the sign after I mumbled "great -- I love it when they notify so far in advance that they're closing the road" ;).
The guys in the truck didn't seem to care that we slipped by though, they waved us on. They probably were required to put the signs out, but not really required to defend their message.
Plus, how the heck do they expect people to get home otherwise with no marked detour or anything?
