road furniture by bikesnick
This is in Purcellville and I haven't been there in years, so I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but that raised center part has a large medallion marker in it.
I guess the point is to get cyclists to slow down. I wonder if the cone is permanent.
Traffic calming for bikes.
Haven't been out that way for a couple months and I can't quite place it. Is this at the very end, right in town? I know there was a medallion like this at that point.

And why should bicyclists dismount...?

Im sorry. BicyclERS.

They still have room on that post for signs. How about:
"Please?"
"We mean it!"

I think they mean "go away"

This is, indeed, the beginning/end of the trail. The trail furniture and sign appeared in the past year. A bench or two and a bike rack were also installed, and they are a nice addition to the restroom and water fountain. Marking the spot is a nice idea, but the attempt at (bicycle) traffic control is bizarre.

So is "cyclists dismount" (or "bicyclers") in the MUTCD? It's interesting that "cyclists may use full lane" absolutely, positively, can't be put up unless it's in the manual. But if you want to put up a sign limiting the rights of cyclists -- or pedestrians -- well, go right ahead.
It's interesting too that they've responded to the questionable legality of stop signs on trails by putting "required by law" below the stop sign. I wonder if that's in the MUTCD too.
I don't recall seeing either the last time I checked the MUTCD section on trail crossings.

If I were just wearing tennis shoes, I might dismount; but in road shoes, it's much less safe to try to walk my bike across a road than to ride carefully. Believe me, it's no fun to hit a slick patch with the cleats!

@Contrarian. In addition, MUTCD 9B.01.05 requires the bottom of the sign to be at least 4 feet above the ground.

This is at the very end of the trail. The Bicyclers Dismount sign is bizarre. It suggests that a bicycler (ha ha) can't legally ride anywhere but the trail and will now have to walk.
