Mayor Gray and other dignataries will formally open the new Anacostia Riverwalk Trail Bridge over the CSX railroad tracks on the river's West Bank Trail today at 11:00 am. This will held at the south entrance which is the one closest to the river. In addition to this, he'll be releasing the 20 year Vision for a Sustainable DC. This plan, which is heavy on ambition and low on funding, includes among its goals the construction of
80 miles of bicycle lanes within a few years, about one-fourth more than exist today.
Good thing about a 20-yr plan is that no one will remember to grade him on it in 2032. All of the heavy lifting will be done -- or not done -- much later on.
Not to say that all of these long-term plans are bad. Some of them can be good, when real progress is made toward fulfilling the ultimate goals. Hopefully the Gray administration will do more than just publish some vague guidelines about what they'd like to see a generation from now.
