Photo by Rootchopper who adds "The National Park Service widened a section of the Mount Vernon Trail today. I don't know why. It seemed okay to me. The section is between Northdown Road and the Tulane turn off. It's about 2 1/2 miles south of the Beltway."
Was there more pavement put down - or was is just the shoulders that were added?
Just unpaved shoulders. This picture was taken several days ago and there has been no additional work done. I suspect they were beefing up the shoulder which is on the downhill river side of the trail.
BTW look for more and more of these types of ad hoc repairs. Mother nature is constantly taking bites out of the trail.

They also added a little asphalt patch on one of the two bridge-to-trail connections by National. It's nice, but the fault-line crack at the other bridge would be a nicer fix.
