Good morning
- Eric P. Newcomer, writes a very different - and much better - article than his last one, with this good little piece on how the District is undermining its own sustainability goals by subsidizing parking for employees. "Over just a year, a D.C. government employee essentially receives a $1,251.24 discount [on parking] when compared with the average free-market monthly cost....The city flatly does not offer benefits for employees who bike to work, and only about 7,700 union employees receive a $25 monthly Metro subsidy." He notes that the Sustainable DC plan suggests two programs for businesses that would encourage less driving, but that the city offers neither program.
- "Maryland leaders are confident the Purple Line from Bethesda to New Carrollton will open by 2020." With the Purple Line the state will construct the last stretch of the CCT.
So much of the sustainability dialogue is regurgitated and recycled happy-talk. To achieve real sustainability we need fewer politicians and more engineers.
