This has the possibility to be a real destination trail
The partially built Three Notch Trail has its state permits in place and is ready to forge through Mechanicsville later this year. When the newest 5 miles of hiking and biking trail are completed, there will be 11 straight miles from Laurel Grove to the county line.
The trail first started in Charlotte Hall, with a 1-mile section built in 2006. Then in 2008 another 2¼ miles were added. In June 2011, another separate section, 3 miles to the south in Laurel Grove, was completed.
This section was more difficult to build because of encroachment on the ROW and opposition from neighbors
“We would encourage them to become neighbors of the trail,” he said of those with concerns. Initially there was community opposition when the trail was first proposed in northern St. Mary’s
Even when this section is done, the trail won't be complete
The next scheduled part of the Three Notch Trail would run from Wildewood in California to Hollywood. The trail cannot follow the old railroad right of way there, though, which was used for the widening of Route 235 in the 1980s.
There are also pieces of the Three Notch Trail in California. Developers built or are going to build it from Wildewood to Walmart and county government built a half-mile from Walmart to Chancellor’s Run Road. Another two miles of trail will be built from Chancellor’s Run Road to Pegg Road as part of the FDR Boulevard project.
