This is great. Pittsburgh is a greatly underrated city. And it does have some serious hills, which, I think, argues for the presence of bike protected lanes since it's hard to go up a steep hill in a straight line. Time for a visit in the spring, this time with the bikes.

I was surprised when I walked across Penn Ave to look over and see that a third of the street was a cycle track. It looked that much like part of the street. That might be why a driver almost turned onto it. The best part is that it lets you bike both directions on a one-way street.
I like the term "cycle track", not "protected bike lanes", which soon becomes just "bike lanes" and then no one knows what you're talking about. Besides, this is a two-way facility that's much more like a path than bike lanes.
