I live close by to this, and we've been wondering what the point of that was - is there any benefit to designating this a bike trail? Will it actually connect to something eventually?

It's not really a bike trail. I think it's the path that connects the memorial to the parking lot that people are encouraged to use for it (farther South on Washington Avenue).

I biked it yesterday! Along with the quarter-block remnant of Canal St. nearby.
There's actually a beautifully wide and empty sidewalk along Washington Avenue for that stretch, so even less need for the path as an infrastructure element. Or is that part of "downtown", with no sidewalk riding permitted?
Once the dust settles for the Virginia Ave tunnel project, that sidewalk could actually be a useful link to something.
