Folly Branch Trail receives Recretaional Trails funding

Maryland's SHA announced 54 recipients of $1.4 million in grants to fund Recreational Trails Program (RTP) projects across the State. Other than a few statewide programs, there were only two in the DC area.

The Folly Branch Connector Trail (FBCT), a multi-use connector trail in PG County that will link communities south of MD 450 with the Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis (WB&A) Trail, recieved $40,000 and the Montgomery Parks Foundation received $30,000 to fund Student Conservation Association projects.

DC funds SCA projects with RTC money as well, and they use the money to fund projects in which students make small repairs and improvements along area trails. For example, they often remove illegally dumped trash from along the Met Branch Trail. 

The FBCT

will connect the existing Lakeview Trail (located south of MD 450) with the western terminus of the WB&A Trail on the north side of MD 450 via a new 8-foot wide paved trail, boardwalk and bridge over the Folly Branch. 

This trail will cross under MD 450 through an existing box culvert. A 6-foot wide spur trail will lead from the culvert to the Vista Gardens Marketplace, providing a convenient way for residents to access the shopping center. 

Construction is slated to begin late 2014 and the trail will be completed in 2015.

This is the second Maryland grant win for the FBCT this year. In September the project received $200,000 from the Bikeways Program.
