DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo was at a recent ANC 6A Transportation Committee Meeting, mostly to talk about the Streetcar I suspect, but he also discussed other issues in the area of more direct impact to cyclists.
I was late to the meeting and didn't record it, so take the below with a grain of salt.
- Florida Avenue Mulitmodal Study - DDOT last had a meeting nearly 2 years ago, but people haven't forgotten about it. A report of the "Findings and Recommendations" was supposed to come out in May 2014, but I can't find it anywhere if it did. So it seems to have stalled, which is a shame because two of the three alternatives would have included bike lanes on Florida Ave. Anyway, they're currently in the process of hiring consultants for the project, and once they do, the 30% design will be about 6-7 months away from completion. The 90% design would come 9 months after that.
- Maryland Avenue NE - The concept plan includes bike lanes. It seems like there's been a small delay, but the project should still be completed in 2017. A traffic analysis shows the project won't cause congestion.
- 17th Street Safety Improvement Project - This project would add a shared bike lane (sharrows) to the westside lane of 17th NE/SE from Benning Road to Potomac Avenue. It has been delayed many times due to utility work by Washington Gas and then/now by DC Water, but work could start soon.
- C Street Mutlimodal Study - The concept plan is in the process of wrapping up now. The design should be completed in 2017 with construction starting in 2018.
One other thing that came up was the Hopscotch Bridge replacement. I missed most of that, but they did mention that they were committed to preserving the artwork currently lining the sides of the bridge, either in the new bridge or in other public art. That's a very long piece of artwork, so I wouldn't be surprised if they only preserved part of it, but it could be used to line the Metropolitan Branch Trail along the railroad tracks perhaps.
For the Florida project, is there any sense of which alternative was selected?

I lived at 10th and Maryland NE for four years as a full-time bike commuter, and in my estimation I biked the stretch from 10th to Stanton Park approximately 2000 times. Shortly after moving in I went to a project planning meeting and was excited and hopeful about the possibility of bike facilities. Silly me. At least it sounds like it shouldn't take another four years to implement? (Or maybe it will. Wouldn't be surprising.)
