IIRC, bicycles were not much use in WWI because of the nature of trench warfare. They were used famously by the Japanese in WWII.

I believe the Brompton folding bike was born this way - developed for troops to use.

Early attempts at the Brompton folding tank were less successful, but do live on in caterpillar tracks.
