Montgomery County is updating their bike plan, which I have blogged about before, and they held their first meeting on the preliminary plan tonight in Silver Spring, with the next on Thursday in Bethesda. I didn't go, but I'm assuming it was a charming affair in which people complained about parking and buildings near them that are one story too tall. If you know of any coverage of it, let me know in the comments.
But if you're like me and you didn't go and you probably won't go because you have like 45 kids at home or something don't feel left out. You can comment through something called "the internet" ("What's that?" "You're soaking in it.") Simply go to the county's Bikeway React Map and start making comments on the proposed facilities. The more you comment and the more detailed you comment, the better the bike plan will be.
I attended the first of the five public meetings last night and the proposed routes and ideas were generally well received. There certainly were a few critical comments about "my street" and "why plan for bikes when the traffic is already so bad." Yet, I heard mostly positive and constructive discussions.
The County bike planners are using some creative public input techniques and their bikeway typology and proposed routes are well-designed and easy to understand. They're off to a great start!
