Today the Shakespeare Theater announced the lineup for their annual Bikespeare Festival, and it should be a good one.
William Shakespeare was, of course, an avid bike commuter whose influence was critical to getting London to install the city’s first bike lanes - on Victoria Street (which was then known as Matilda Street) - over the objection of neighbors concerned about parking and scarlet fever. His love of cycling is evident in his plays, many of which are about cycling or include characters who bike, the most famous of which are “The Bike Courier of Venice”, “As You Bike It” and “BMX Bandits”.
This year, as every year, the week’s festivities will end with its Play on Wheels in which actors on bicycles perform a Shakespeare play while riding loops around Hains Point. Guests are invited to ride behind them to experience his plays the way Shakespeare intended.
This year’s play is his most famous tragedy - “Eyelet” - the tale of the young prince and his broken bike rack. It includes the famous line “all the world’s a stage, and every lane is a bike lane.”
