11th Annual Lymphoma Research Ride

With a goal to raise critical funds for lymphoma research and benefit patients living with this blood cancer, the Research Ride has raised more than $4.5 million to support the Lymphoma Research Foundation's (LRF) mission and to make a significant impact in funding potentially life-saving lymphoma research. Each year, hundreds of lymphoma survivors, families, friends and communities have joined together to ride in honor and memory of those whose lives have been touched by lymphoma at the Lymphoma Research Ride.

Since the Ride’s inception nine years ago, it has grown to be one of the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s most successful and inspiring events.  This event is critical for raising funds for innovative research programs, as well as supporting the educational programs and services LRF provides to those touched by the disease. Dr. Bruce and Christine Cheson and the rest of the volunteer Ride committee put their heart and soul into making the Lymphoma Research Ride a tremendous success each year.

Northern Virginia Tour de Cure 2015 seeking volunteers

What:

Tour de Cure is a challenging cycling event that allows both the avid and recreational cyclist to raise money for diabetes research, advocacy, and information programs. 1,600 cyclists in the national capital area participate as part of a team or individually. All funds raised support the American Diabetes Association in our mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Last year, our Northern Virginia Tour de Cure participants raised close to $650,000!

Why Volunteer:

Make a personal impact on the community, especially on those living with diabetes. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. As a Tour de Cure volunteer, you are guaranteed to make new friends, expand your professional network, and boost your social skills. Not to mention the event is a lot of fun with giveaways from vendors, free lunch, free breakfast, free t-shirt, etc...

When: Volunteer Sunday June 7, Anytime from 2:00pm-6:00pm

What Volunteers will do:

Tasks vary on what time of day you arrive. Volunteer duties range from set up, clean up, greeters, registration, routes markers, food servers, bike marshals, SAG drivers, cheerleaders (perfect for kids and boy/girl scouts), crossing guards, rest stop/water stop supervisors, first aid and more.

Where Ride starts:

Reston Town Center, 11900 Market St, Reston VA 20190, ride goes along W&OD trail through Purcellville VA to Marshal, VA. We need volunteers to cover the geographical spectrum of the ride.

One Less Project fundraiser

The One Less Project is dedicated to eliminating the socioeconomic disparities that interfere with the prevention and treatment of cancer. We are having our first fundraiser on November 15th at SoulCycle DC. 100% of the proceeds from this event will be going directly to local Washington, DC Patient Navigation Program's that aid with the financial and emotional barriers that patient's from lower socioeconomic statuses deal with. 

Volunteer for the Total 200 Ride

The Total 200 Ride is a fully supported double century  (200 mile of 200 kilometer options) bike ride that starts and ends at Anacostia Park and takes riders on a loop through southern Maryland. The event is scheduled for this Saturday.

Total 200 is an event of ReachAbove, an organization that raises funds for charities through athletic events. This year, Total 200, once again is proud to join hands with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in their efforts to SAVE THE BAY. Proceeds from this year's Total 200 ride will go to help build a sustainable bay for today, tomorrow and the future.

Diabetes Alert Day and the Tour de Cure

The American Diabetes Association will be running a charity ride in DC this fall. 

With nearly 26 million people living with diabetes in the U.S. and another 79 million at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, the disease is taking a toll on the country. The American Diabetes Association (the Association) is acting on both the local and national level to stop diabetes.

On Diabetes Alert Day, Tuesday, March 25, we can help change the future of diabetes. To build awareness, the Association is asking Americans to take Diabetes Risk Test. The test helps individuals assess their risk for diabetes based on several simple questions.

On a local level, the Association is holding its annual signature cycling event to support diabetes research. The Tour de Cure will be in Reston, VA, on June 1 and  in Washington, DC. on September 27. These will be two of the 90 Tour de Cure events in 44 states around the country. Also, 80 cents of every dollar raised will support the Association’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of people affected by the disease.

To support the Association's mission, a special group of riders embodies the spirit of the Tour de Cure. Red Riders are individuals living with diabetes who raise awareness and funds to help find a cure for diabetes. Representing people with pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes, Red Riders know what it means to have diabetes and want others to understand the disease’s deadly consequences.

“If you are a person surviving diabetes, I implore you to ride this year,” says Mari Ruddy, founder of the Red Rider program. “I ask you to get on your bike and ride strong. Riding in a Tour de Cure is the affirmation of your courage and perseverance.”

The Red Riders are an especially important driving - or cycling - force as Diabetes Alert Day draws near. This March 25, join the Red Riders and the Association as they help spread the word and encourage others to take the brief Diabetes Risk Test to determine their individual risk of getting the disease.

Do you have diabetes yourself? Interested in becoming a Red Rider? All you need to do is contact your local Tour de Cure staff member to tell them you want to be recognized as a Red Rider on the day of the event. Red Riders receive a free Red Rider bike jersey to wear proudly on ride day. Remember, riding your bike is a great way to stay in shape and exercise is extremely important for everyone with diabetes.
